Importing content
Posted by N3V Games (Paul) on 03 August 2015 05:01 PM

T:ANE and TRS19 provide two ways to import content. Other methods may work to some degree but are not supported. This article is a guide to what will and won’t work when moving content around between Trainz versions.

Supported Content Install Methods:

  1. Downloading from the Trainz Download Stations using Content Manager (First Class Ticket recommended)
  2. Downloading DLC (payware) items using the in-game downloader
  3. Importing Content Files (CDPs) using Content Manager
  4. Importing Content Folders (Open for Edit Folders) using Content Manager (See below for more details)

Not Supported:

  1. Built-in content cannot be moved from the install location (instead, download these items from the DLS)
  2. Using Windows to move Local, Original and Packages data folders between builds and then using "Rebuild Database" to force update the content. This is known to cause errors.

Note that almost all "pre-Trainz A New Era" content can be imported into TANE. There will be some items that require fixing in TANE due to changed validation conditions.

The exception to using Windows to move your content is when you are changing the Local Data Folder path from one location to another. In this case your build number has not changed and so the contents and database will operate correctly.

 IMPORTING FOLDERS

To import a Folder into TANE from another Trainz installation, you must ensure the item is "Open for Edit". This is done using Content Manager.

  1. In the "older" version of Trainz, open Content Manager
  2. Create a "filter" using the 'search' panel on the left side of the screen to view the items you wish to import. For example, adding a filter "Installed = True" and "Builtin = False" would provide all your non-builtin content.
  3. R-click and choose Open for Edit. This process creates a new Folder for each asset in the Editing folder
  4. To find the Windows path to this folder, on the Launcher click Trainz Settings > Import tab.
  5. Close this version of Trainz
  6. Open the new version of Trainz (where you want to import the content to)
  7. Open Content Manager
  8. Click File > Import Content Folder
  9. Navigate to the Editing folder path you found in Step 4
  10. Ensure the path at the top shows as something like C:\Users\<pcname>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE\build nju354pt1\editing, and "editing" shows as the Folder name in the box at the bottom
  11. Click Select
  12. The "installing" window will now appear and the items will then be imported into your new Trainz installation.

NOTE: You cannot use this method to import BUILTIN content from TS12 or TANE. You must use the Download Station to download any builtin TS12 assets, or use the in-game download option for TANE content.
