How to update your localisation file
Posted by N3V Games (Paul) on 26 February 2022 12:37 PM

Trainz uses a localisation file which provides localised translations into various languages. It is possible to manually override the exiting translations by updating the files.

IMPORTANT NOTE: By updating the files, you will not be able to update your game until you have restored the original file. Therefore it is important to follow our guide if you choose to make any updates.

These steps are recommended only for people comfortable with using Windows Explorer or Finder on Mac.

Editing your localisation file:

  1. Navigate to your install folder in Explorer or Finder (e.g. C:\Program Files\N3V Games\Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019)
  2. Open the /resources folder
  3. Rename the /strings folder to /strings.original
  4. Copy the /strings.original folder and rename it to /strings
  5. You now have your original folder (renamed) and your new strings folder that you can edit
  6. Open the /strings folder and open core_<your language>.txt using Notepad or similar
  7. Make any edits you wish to make
  8. Save the .txt file
  9. Start Trainz and check your new strings

Reverting your localisation file: (Required prior to patching)

  1. Navigate to your install folder in Explorer or Finder (e.g. C:\Program Files\N3V Games\Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019)
  2. Open the /resources folder
  3. Rename the /strings folder to /strings.oldupdate
  4. Rename the /strings.original folder to /strings
  5. Start Trainz and run the patch update

NOTE: Once the patch has been run, there may be changes or addition to various strings. Therefore we DO NOT recommend that you simply re-use your oldupdate file.
We suggest instead you follow the editing steps above.

  4. Open the /resources folder
  5. Rename the /strings folder to /strings.original
