There are no differences in features between Steam and MyTrainz editions of Trainz; each will include all of the same features and functions for that version. There are, however, some differences for the Steam editions in regards to DLC packs, registration, and updating.

DLC packs

DLC packs purchased through Steam can only be used with the Steam editions of Trainz.

DLC packs purchased through the Trainz Store can be used with any compatible version of Trainz, including Steam versions.

Registration

Registration of the Steam editions is achieved by simply entering your MyTrainz account's username and password into the Internet tab of the Trainz Settings, which you can do by following these steps:

Double click on your Trainz icon

Click on Trainz Settings

Click on the Internet tab

Enter your username and password into the boxes provided (please keep in mind that your username and password are case sensitive), then press enter.

Now try starting Trainz.

When you start Trainz, Trainz will then register itself into your account.

Please note, you will not see any changes in your MyTrainz account's details after registering. The Steam edition of Trainz does not provide access to the digital download through MyTrainz.

Updates/Patches

For updates and patches, these will be installed automatically through Steam.

Select the Patch Installer.app that you unzipped and double click to launch the application

Click "Change Targets" then navigate to select the folder where Trainz A New Era is already installed

Hint: Default location is either Applications/Trainz A New Era or Applications/TANE SP1/Trainz A New Era depending on the version you first installed

/Applications/Trainz A New Era.app will appear greyed out in the path

Click Next to continue

Troubleshooting:

"No patch is available" error - please check that you are patching the correct build number and that you have chosen the correct patch Stream.

"No patchable products" error - while this username may be valid, the message indicates it is not authorised for this version of TANE. Please check that you are using the account that is registered for TANE.

"Selected Target is not valid" - you have not selected the correct folder where your version of TANE is installed

This article provides a step by step guide to installing Trainz: A New Era for Mac Box Editions.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Your Mac version of TANE comes in the form of a .dmg file on a re-usable USB drive. It is important that you do not overwrite this file until you have installed Trainz. After you have installed Trainz, you can create a back-up of the .dmg file and then use the USB for other purposes. Overwriting the original .dmg file is done at your own risk.

Step 1:

Insert the USB into an available USB port.

Step 2:

Navigate to the Trainz A New Era.dmg file as shown below and double click on the file.

Step 3:

The Verifying dialog will appear and check the drive for accuracy.

Step 4:

The Trainz A New Era icon then appears ready for installation.

Step 5:

Drag the Trainz icon onto the Application folder to install TANE

Step 6:

Provide authentication if requested (requires Admin privileges).

Step 7:

Trainz A New Era is now installed and can be located in the Applications folder

All Downloadable Content (DLC) for Trainz is downloaded and installed seamlessly in-game. There are no downloads required from the Trainz store or serial numbers required.

You must log into the Trainz store when purchasing a DLC pack using the same username as used within Trainz, otherwise Trainz will not be able to access the download.

If your loco doesn't have a session already created in Kickstarter County or one of the other built-in routes, you will need to create your own session to use the loco. Follow these simple steps:

USING CREATE SESSION:

Choose your favorite route

Click View Sessions

Select Create Session

Click on the Content Search Filter (top left of the menu bar)

Type in a keyword like blue" for Blue Comet

Click on the Trains tab - only items with "blue" are now showing

Select your loco and place on the track

Add other locos and rules if required (see the manual for more detail)

Click Quickdrive (top left of the menu bar) to begin your session.

USING QUICKDRIVE: (if a consist is included for your loco)

Choose your favorite route

Click View Sessions

Select Quickdrive > Drive Session

Click on the New Train menu option in the Quickdrive Window

Scroll through the list to find your loco and select it

Click on the track to place the consist (ensure you have sufficient track length)

You are now ready to drive.

HINT: Most content will have the operator's name, or a shortened version of the operator's name, in the name of the traincars. For example, for the Blue Comet (operated by the Central Railroad of New Jersey), the start of the name has 'CNJ'.

For the download, please ensure that you do not have Gatekeeper set to block the install. Please use the following steps to do this:

1. Open “System Preferences” (via the dock, or via the Apple menu)
2. Open “Security & Privacy”

3. Go to the “General” tab
4. If necessary, click the lock in the bottom left corner to unlock the tab. You may need to enter your mac’s admin password.
5. Click “Anywhere”
6. In the prompt that pops up, click “Allow from Anywhere”

7. Run the app.

You can possibly reset these settings after you first run Trainz, however we have not tested this.

ALTERNATE SOLUTION:

You may also be able to get Trainz to run by doing the following instead:

1. Control click on the Trainz A New Era.app
2. Choose “Open”
3. Accept the warning about the app being unidentified.

For newer operating systems, such as High Sierra, you may need to follow these steps:

In the Finder, locate the app you want to open. (Don’t use Launchpad to do this. Launchpad doesn’t allow you to access the shortcut menu. )
Control-click the app icon, then choose Open from the shortcut menu.
Click Open.

The app is saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it just as you can any registered app.

If you are still unable to load the app, then please try the following:

Select the icon and control-click to get the quick menu, then clicked ’Show Package Contents’

Now in the resultant display box make a copy of that icon, rename it and past it in your Applications Folder. Now try running the app.

To find out your system specification, you need to run a program called dxdiag

Click on the Windows Start Menu, type in dxdiag and click on dxdiag under the Programs heading.

The diagnostic tool appears in a new window and may take a minute or so to run the diagnostic tests.

The System Tab shows your Operating System, Processor (CPU), and whether DX11 is installed.

Next, click on the Display Tab to find your Graphics Card

PLEASE NOTE: It is possible to have DX11 installed, but not have a graphics card that supports DX11 features.

To find if your graphics card supports DX11, we suggest you type the name of your card into Google Search and add "+DX11" then review the articles that appear e.g. GeForce GT 630 +DX11

For some graphics cards, the version that your graphics card supports may be shown in the 'display' tab in DXDiag in the 'DDI Version' section on the right. If this shows 10, 10.0, or 10.1 then it indicates that your graphics card only supports up to DirectX 10. If this shows 11 or higher, then your graphics card may support DirectX 11.

User content is stored by default at C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE (for TRS19, this will be C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs19\ ). This folder may grow to a substantial size over time. If required, you may specify an alternate location for storing your content:

These instructions apply to build 82340 and above for Windows.

MOVING YOUR DEFAULT LOCATION:

Note the current location of your user content by opening the Launcher > Trainz Settings > Install tab

Open Windows Explorer and create a new empty folder at the desired location (e.g. D:\TANE_Content)

In the Install tab, click on the "..." button and browse to find your newly created folder

Click Select Folder to change the path to your new location

Exit the game and close all game windows

In Windows Explorer, move your existing content into the new folder (see below*)

Start TANE and check the Install tab to confirm that the path has changed and is correct and that everything is working.

If your content is missing, or if a database repair commences, you have made a mistake and will need to re-check the setting above.

* Move all the files and folders from your original Local Data Folder (from Step 1 above) into your NEW folder created in Step 2
i.e. folders like backup, cache, etc plus assets.tdx and keystore.tdx.
This should leave the old content folder empty, and all of your content files under the new folder. You can then delete the old empty folder.

NOTE:

DO NOT ever delete the C:\Users\<pc name>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE folder (or C:\Users\<pc name>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs19 for TRS19) OR the userdata-redirect-map.txt file in that folder. This file is required by TANE/TRS19 to ensure the Local Data Folder is found. If the redirect file does not exist, TANE/TRS19 will create a new one and create a new local data folder in the default location and you are back to your starting point.

If a new unused /build xxxxxxxx folder is created in the default location upon restarting, you have not followed the steps correctly - please review the steps again.

If you are asked to enter your username again, you have not followed the steps correctly - please review the steps again.

CREATING A NEW LOCAL DATA FOLDER

Sometimes your Local Data Folder can end up with corrupt data. In this case, the solution is to create a new folder which contains no 3rd party content. From there, you can then IMPORT your old content and work out which items may be causing issues.

Open the Launcher > Install tab and check the path to your Local Data Folder. The default path is C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE\build xxxxxxxx

Highlight the full path name and use Ctrl-C to copy

Close TANE (and check in Task Manager that it has ended - this may take a few minutes in some circumstances)

Use Crtl-V to paste the path into Windows Explorer

Go up one directory level and rename the folder by adding "-old" to the name (this effectively creates a backup for you)

Open a NEW Windows Explorer window and create a Folder in the desired location (e.g. D:\TANE_data)

Open Launcher > Trainz Settings > Install tab and browse to find your new folder (D:\TANE_data) then click Select Folder

Close TANE (a message will appear saying the game needs a restart)

Restart TANE and check your Install path is pointing to the new location.

Click Start Trainz and wait for TANE to complete a database rebuild (this should only take a few minutes)

Now your TANE install points to the new Local Data Folder at the new location.

NOTE: This process does not copy and of your local content across. To do that, follow this Importing Content guide (which will require that you create the Editing Folder prior to Step 1 above)

The instructions below apply to build 82340 and above for Mac.

MOVING YOUR DEFAULT LOCATION:

1) You will need to locate your LocalData folder. You can find the path to your LocalData folder in Launcher > Trainz Settings > Install.
2) Shut down Trainz
3) Navigate in Finder to the location shown in the install tab of the Trainz Settings
4) Now copy the “build xxxxxxxx” folder (i.e. the folder that your install path was pointing to) to the new location you would like it in.
5) Open the Trainz launcher screen, and then click on 'Trainz Settings'
6) Click on the 'Install' tab, then browse to the new location of your LocalData folder, then select the 'build xxxxxxxx' folder (or equivalent if you have renamed the folder) and then click on 'open' or equivalent
7) Completely close Trainz, then reopen Trainz and see if the changes have taken affect and your content is showing in-game.

CREATING A NEW LOCAL DATA FOLDER

Sometimes your Local Data Folder can end up with corrupt data. In this case, the solution is to create a new folder which contains no 3rd party content. From there, you can then IMPORT your old content and work out which items may be causing issues.

Paste the path into Finder

Go up one directory level and rename the folder by adding "-old" to the name (this effectively creates a backup for you)

Open a NEW Finder window and create a Folder in the desired location

Open Launcher > Trainz Settings > Install tab and click the button marked '...' to browse to find your new folder, then click Select Folder or equivalent

Close TANE (a message will appear saying the game needs a restart)

Restart TANE and check your Install path is pointing to the new location. You will also need to enter your MyTrainz username and password into the 'MyTrainz' or 'Internet' tab.

Click Start Trainz and wait for TANE to complete a database rebuild (this should only take a few minutes)

Now your TANE install points to the new Local Data Folder at the new location.

Sometimes your database may become corrupted and affects built-in or DLC content.

Generally, a standard Database Rebuild from Launcher > Developer > Rebuild Database will rectify the situation.

To run an Extended Database Repair:

On the launcher, click on the 'developer' option at the top of the screen

Hold down the CTRL key

Left click on Rebuild database

Some versions of Trainz may not detect the CTRL key being held down. In this case you can manually start an extended database rebuild by following these steps:

Click on 'Trainz Settings' on the launcher screen

Go to the tab marked 'Dev' (not the one on the top menu)

Click on 'Enable Advanced Debug Tools'

Close all TRSxxx windows

Start TRSxxx.exe again

Click on 'Developer' at the top of the Launcher (not the one in Trainz Settings)

Click on 'Run TrainzUtil Command'

Type in 'repairdatabase extended' (without the quotes)

Click 'ok'

This will perform a full rebuild of the database repair and will force the DLC packages to be reinstalled fully (or other database corruption to be repaired).

TRS19 and T:ANE have been designed to be backwards compatible with the majority of content from previous versions of Trainz so it is possible to import your content from TS12 (or previous versions) into your new version of Trainz

It is important to know that both TRS19 and T:ANE require the original textures to show correctly in-game, and therefore built-in content, which does not contain source files, cannot be imported directly (or it will show with errors).

We are currently in the process of uploading built-in content from previous versions of Trainz to the Download Station which will provide access to that content.

Here is our recommended approach for importing a route and it’s dependencies from your older build:

In Content Manager, select the group of files you want to import excluding the built-in assets (if you are unsure how to do this, see this article for the process to select all the non-built dependencies)

In Content Manager, use Ctrl-A to select the full list of assets, then Ctrl-E to open the items for edit.

Navigate to your Userdata > Editing folder (default is: C:\Program Files (x86)\N3V Games\Trainz Simulator 12\UserData\editing for TS12 and C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\TANE\build xxxxxxx for TANE)

Launch T:ANE, click on “Manage Content” then drag the folders from the above Editing folder into the T:ANE Content Manager window.

To ensure you don’t overwrite newer versions of files, in T:ANE Content Manager, filter on Date Installed = Today, then r-click “Open-for-edit” and r-click “Revert Unsubmitted Changes”

You now have the new route, and all the non-builtin items in T:ANE, so next we need to get the builtin items from the DLS

In T:ANE Content Manager, select the Route that you imported and R-Click > Download. This will check the DLS for further missing Dependencies and download those items and their dependencies.

Don’t forget to go back into your old build and Revert the content you had Open for Edit

Following this process, you do NOT need to run a database repair as T:ANE already knows about the assets when you imported them. (See this article about moving “packages” which DOES require a db rebuild)

Also, do NOT attempt to bring your older build assets over into T:ANE by simply copying your Local folder (you can import the entire folder by dragging and dropping it onto Content Manager but using the steps above is more robust).

Please note that the following items cannot be imported into T:ANE directly:

Trainz built-in content (but this can be downloaded from DLS)

.ja files

.tzarc files

If you are seeing the 'Starting Trainz' window appear either momentarily (i.e. disappears, then nothing happens), or for a very long time (i.e. more than about 20 minutes) after clicking on Start Trainz, then please ensure that your computer does meet the system requirements for Trainz.

You can find your system's specifications by following the information in this article.

You can find the system requirements for Trainz: A New Era in this article.

If your computer does meet the system requirements, then please ensure that the drivers for your computer's hardware are fully up to date, especially the video card drivers. You can obtain the latest drivers for your video card from the manufacturer's website (i.e. NVidia, AMD, etc).

Also ensure that Trainz has full permissions on your computer, including through any security programs, by doing the following:

Go into Window Explorer (or My Computer), and navigate to the Trainz folder, and right click on the 'TANE.exe' file, and click on 'properties', and then click on the tab called 'Compatibility'. Now set the Privilege Level to "Run this program as an administrator", then click on 'apply', then on 'Ok'.

Please also ensure that you have given Trainz full access in your firewall and anti-virus. Please try adding the 'TANE.exe' file as an exception in your firewall and anti-virus.

If all of your downloaded (including DLC packs) and custom content has suddenly disappeared, then this indicates that Trainz may have lost the 'link' with the LocalData folder, in which case it will generate a new LocalData folder.

Please try following these steps to ensure that your build is pointing to the correct location; these steps can be used for both Windows and Mac:

Find the path to your current Local Data folder by double clicking on the TANE/TRS19/TRS22/Trainz Plus icon, then click on 'Trainz Settings' on the initial launch screen, then click on the 'install' tab. The path will look something like C:/Users/%username%/AppData/Local/N3V Games/TANE/build xxxxxxxx for TANE or C:\Users\<pc name>\AppData\Local\N3V Games\trs19 for TRS19 (this will look something like "/Users/'macOS username'/Library/Containers/com.n3vgames.trs22/Data/" or "~/Library/Containers/com.n3vgames.trs22/Data/").

Shut down Trainz. (If on Windows, then ensure that tane.exe/TRS19.exe/TRS22.exe had ended (check in Task Manager no other tane.exe processes are running))

Navigate to the LocalData location, and find the "build xxxxxxxx" folder(s).

If there are multiple 'build xxxxxxxxx' folders, then please right click and then click on 'properties' for each one. This will tell you which one is the biggest; when you have worked out which is the biggest make a note of it's name.
Double click on the TANE icon again, and then click on 'Trainz Settintgs' and then go to the install tab. Now click on the '...' button to the right of the LocalData path, and then select the folder that was found in the previous step, then click 'ok' or 'open'.
Now close the Trainz Settings window, then click on 'developer' on the top toolbar and click on 'rebuild database'.
When the database rebuild has completed, please try running Trainz again.

Note: On PC, your C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Local\N3V Games\ folder may be hidden.

To unhide the appdata folder:
Step 1: Open a Windows File Explorer window and go to the “View” tab.
Step 2: Click the “Options” button on the ribbon and then go to the “View” tab on the Folder Options window that opens.
Step 3: Click the box beside the “Show Hidden Files, Folders and Drives” option in the list of advanced settings.
Step 4: Click “Apply” and then “OK” to unhide hidden items, including AppData.

If you used a different location for the LocalData folder before the content disappeared, then please ensure that the correct path for the location you previously chose is being used.

If the content is not re-loaded from the alternate LocalData folder, then it may not be possible to retrieve the missing content.

Most versions of Trainz A New Era require an Internet connection at the time of install and can then be accessed without an Internet connection for up to 30 days. If you are offline for longer than that period, you will need to go online to gain authentication (this can be achieved with a mobile hotspot connection, or similar).

The exception to this rule is the Windows Deluxe Box version available from the Trainz Store (formerly SimulatorCentral.com) which has an Offline Mode that never requires an internet connection (this option is not available for Mac).

Of course an Internet connection is required for Download Station access, multiplayer and for DLC authentication. Enabling the Offline Mode will disable any installed DLC packs, as well as Download Station, multiplayer, in-game chat, and online patch installer access.

Trainz allows users to create and share content. Errors and warnings enable both content creators and end-users to identify if content has any issues that could cause items to behave incorrectly or affect performance in-game.

Warnings are just that – they will show that the asset will “work” but it may not work exactly as the author intended.

Errors are more serious and these items will not show in-game or will show in “red” in-game.

Resolving errors by end-users is often possible by updating the “config file” but sometimes fixing the asset requires the original source files.

The Trainz Wiki has more guidance for content creators regarding how to create error free content.

For Trainz A New Era and Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019, Downloadable Content (DLC) items ordered through the Trainz Store will appear as "Available to Download" when you next start Trainz.

No serial key is required and there is no external download link available.

Start Trainz, the in-game download window will appear listing all the DLC routes, sessions or locos you are entitled to. (If the window does not appear, try going into the Routes menu, and if that fails, then exit Trainz and when you restart click Launcher > File > Download purchased items).

Choose which items you wish to install now by selecting the item and clicking the Download button or click the Download All button.

Items will then install automatically and can be found in either the Routes, Sessions or Trains Tab menus, depending on which DLC item was purchased.

FINDING ITEMS ONCE DOWNLOADED:

Some train/locomotive DLCs may include a session for the Kickstarter County route. If you are using TANE, or have the Kickstarter County (not Kickstarter County 2) route in TRS19, and you wish to try the train or drive the session, then when the download is complete to see if a session for that particular train exists. It is a quick way to jump in and start driving your locomotive straight away. If a Session doesn’t exist, you can follow this guide to create new sessions using your DLC items.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

Ensure that your produsct is patched to the latest version, some DLC packs will only work in the latest versions of TANE.

If the in-game download window does not appear, restart the game then from the Trainz Launcher, click File > Download Purchased Items, then click Start Trainz.

If this fails, you can also try removing your Username from the Launcher > Internet Tab, then re-entering your details and restarting Trainz

Check the account used to order the product matches the username that you have entered in Launcher > Settings > Internet.

Also, if you have the DRM Free version, ensure you uncheck the "Disable Online Features" option then restart the game.

If you have downloaded a number of items, check that you haven't already installed the items you are looking for by using Content Manager search filter.

For newer releases of OSx, please try running the app by following these steps:

1) In the Finder, locate the app you want to open. (Don’t use Launchpad to do this. Launchpad doesn’t allow you to access the shortcut menu. )
2) Control-click the app icon, then choose Open from the shortcut menu.
3) Click Open.

The app is saved as an exception to your security settings, and you can open it in the future by double-clicking it just as you can any registered app.

In some cases, some content may appear in Trainz as 'Modified, Payware (Not Active)', 'Installed, Payware (Not Active)', or 'Not Installed, Payware (Not Active)', and will not be able to be used.

If the content is shown as 'Modified, Payware (Not Active)', then this indicates that a Trainz Payware asset has been installed from a cdp file or similar, or has been opened for edit and then submitted.

If it has been installed from a cdp file or similar then you will need to delete the asset and then download the DLC pack that contains the asset. You can delete the asset by right clicking on it in Content Manager, and then clicking on Delete.

If the content has been opened for edit and then submitted, then you can revert the asset by right clicking on it then click on 'revert to original'.

If the content is shown as 'Installed, Payware (Not Active)' then this indicates that you might not have access to this content. If you obtained the content through a membership, then please ensure that your membership is still active and that the DLC pack the content is from is shown as select in your Content Vault.

You may find that simply removing and re-entering your MyTrainz account's username and password in the settings may also resolve this.

If the content is shown as 'Not Installed, Payware (Not Active)' then this indicates that the content is not installed in Trainz. This may be content that is in a DLC pack you own but have not installed, a DLC pack that you do not yet own, or may be part of a forthcoming DLC pack or update to a DLC pack, or may be an older version of an asset that is already installed. This will not affect the use of any already installed content in Trainz.
